Within close proximity to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple (one of the most visited tourist attraction in Kyoto) is Ryozen Kannon Temple which houses a gigantic white Kannon (観音) Buddha statue. My family made a brief stop at this temple during our Family trip in Japan (07112018 - 14112018). Significance of TempleRyozen Kannon is a temple that honors the fallen Japanese as well as the foreign national soldiers who died in World War II. There is a memorial hall where you can pay your respect to the fallen within the temple. Although the temple carries a deep significance to honoring the fallens and there are not many visitors when we were there, the temple gave me a sense of calm and inner peace. I was glad to have made the visit and was even more glad that this place was not flooded with tourist. DirectionsIf you are coming from Kyoto Station, you can take the local bus 206 and alight 8 stops later. You will see a large torii gate (which is also the path to Ryozen Kannon Temple) on your right at the traffic junction just before your alighting bus stop. From the alighting bus stop, it will be a less than 10 minute walk to Ryozen Kannon Temple. Interesting Thing to SeeThe most obvious attraction of this temple is the Giant White Kannon Buddha statue. The statue measures 24 meter in height and weighs over 500 ton. I have visited many temple with 観音 in various Asian countries but it is the only gigantic sitting 観音 Statue that I have ever seen. The precinct yard of Ryozen Kannon was known as the place of peace and good luck. It is the sacred place where the hidden treasure of Esoteric buddhism called "Nousashou-Nyoi-Houju" was buried in Heian Era. There is a spherical golden stone here where you can make a wish (Follow the instruction written at the side of the stone if you wish to make a wish). Another interesting thing to see is the huge Buddha's footprint stone at the back of the temple. I did not managed to take many photos in the temple as the calmness of the temple makes me forgot to do so. If you wish to know more about the things you can do at this temple, you can visit the Ryozen Kannon Temple official website for more details. DetailsEntry Fees: 600 yen
