The first place we explored during our short visit to Nha Trang as the first port of call in our 6D5N cruise on board Genting Dream Cruise (29092019 - 04092019) was Long Son Pagoda.
Long Son Pagoda is situated on the foothill of Trai Thuy Mountain in the city of Nha Trang. It is a 20 mins car ride from the port.
Long Son Pagoda is also known as Chua Long Son. Built in 1886 in the style of Taoist architecture, Long Son Pagoda has been home to many high-ranking Buddhist monks and the Vietnam Buddhist Studies Foundation was founded here in 1936.
There is no admission fee to this temple.
I felt a sense of serenity when I enter the temple which is a sharp contrast to the noisy traffic outside.
You can see the unique architecture style of Taoist architecture in the main hall characterized by the embellishment of mythical animals and sculptures of Taoist gods. Do note that you need to be properly dress if you wish to enter the main hall.
The main attraction of the temple is behind the main hall. At the top of 152 steps is a 24 m tall white Buddha seated on a lotus.
Halfway up lies the 14 m long Sleeping Buddha. You can take a break here if needed. Locals believe that you will be blessed with good health if you pray sincerely while touching the foot of the Sleeping Buddha. Do note that it is regard as disrespectful to the Buddha to climb up onto the platform.
Once ready, it is time to continue the climb.
Finally after climbing for about 10 mins, the white Buddha is in sight.
The 24 m white Buddha really feels very impressive when viewed from up close. You can take your time to look around and do some praying and/or mediation. You can also enjoy a bird eye view of Nha Trang from here.
My personal tip:
- Even though the climb is not very long, it is still best to stock up on drinking water especially on a hot day. - Try to go early as the crowd is lesser. When we were preparing to leave the area, multiple tourist bus just arrived.
Overall I would recommends this place to someone looking for a quiet spot with fewer tourist, no admission fee, a nice city view and a 24 m white Buddha is really something impressive to look at from up close.
