After enjoying 4 days of autumn in the Kansai region of Japan, our next destination during our Japan family trip (07112018 - 14112018) was to Kawaguchiko (one of the fuji five lakes) which is rated as one of the 10 best places to see autumn leaves in Japan by jrailpass. There are many ways to get to Kawaguchiko from Osaka. The cheapest way would be to take the overnight highway bus directly from Osaka to Kawaguchiko. You can check Fujikyuko bus for more information. If you have purchased JR Pass, you can opt to make the journey via Shinkansen just like my family. We check out from our AirBnb and make our way to Namba Station at around 10am in preparation for a 6 hour journey to Kawaguchiko. We took the Midosuji Line from Namba Station to Shin-Osaka Station where our journey will continue via the Shinkansen. It is highly recommended that you make seat reservation beforehand to secure best seats for your journey (Especially if you have purchased JR Pass as you can make seat reservation at no additional cost). As for me, I have reserved seats on the Shinkansen Hikari 518 for my family which departs from Shin-Osaka Station at 11:16. With some time to spare, I decided to purchase bento to enjoy on the Shinkansen. There are quite a few bento shops in Shin-Osaka Station. I feel that they are very similar. I decided to purchase my bento at Ekiben Nigiwa not only because it is relatively famous but also because it is right at the center of the station. Finally we can proceed to board our Shinkansen. From here it will be a 155 min ride to Shin Yokohama Station. Another reason why it is highly recommended that you reserved your seats is that you can actually see Mount Fuji halfway through the journey if you take the left side seats travelling from Shin Osaka towards Tokyo. You have to be very attentive if you are coming from Osaka. Mount Fuji will only be in view around Shin-Fuji Station after 2 hours of travel for a duration of around 3 mins. After the excitement of seeing Mount Fuji from the Shinkansen, we would soon arrived at Shin Yokohama Station. From Shin Yokohama Station, we made 2 JR transfer to reach Otsuki Station (Both covered under our JR Pass). There are many train options from Otsuki Station to Kawaguchiko Station. The cheapest would be to take the local line. However after travelling for a few hours, I believed that the quickest option is more suitable for me and my family. Therefore we took the Fujisan Express. Happen to see a Thomas and Friend Theme Train at the station as well. Looks like an interesting option for family with kids. Finally we arrived at Kawaguchiko. Yay!!! PS: Hyperdia is a very useful tool to search, plan and check train schedule in Japan.
