Are you one of the lucky ones to catch a glimpse of the super duper ultra rare solar eclipse that is fully visible right here in Singapore on this boxing day (26 Dec 2019)?
I am very happy to be able to share my excitement here for being able to see such a once in a lifetime phenomenon right here in the heartland of Singapore all thanks to the hard work by volunteers whom have been working closely with Residents Committees to plan and organize a solar eclipse viewing for 300 people in Ang Mo Kio.
I first chanced upon the event organized by Stargazing Singapore when I was searching online for more information about the solar eclipse.
With nothing prepared, I decided to head down to the mentioned venue at Ang Mo Kio to see if I really have a chance to participate in an event that allows me to catch this once in a lifetime phenomenon for free. YES FOR FREE!!!
I arrived at Ang Mo Kio Blk 134 as stated for the event just before 11:00. But the place was already crowded when I arrived!!! As I feared, they have already given out all the solar glasses (ToT)
They did set up a huge telescope so that everyone have a chance to see the solar eclipse but that draws a very long queue.
For those who failed to obtain the free solar glasses like me, you can either borrow from those who has or be creative and make your own viewing kit.
Without the glasses the sun still looks like the sun:
With the glasses over the camera of my phone, this is what i get:
Nearing the expected full eclipse timing at around 13:20, dark clouds started to gather. The crowd were disappointed at first but then people started cheering because the dark clouds allows the solar eclipse to be visible without using the solar glasses.
All in all I am really glad to witness such a rare phenomenon right here in Singapore and would really like to thank the volunteers that were trying their best to support the huge crowd with limited supply of solar glasses.
