What is the best way to share your joy of travelling to your loved ones? If your method is to post a picture of your boarding pass online which I once did on social media, you better stop now !!!! This simple act of posting boarding pass on social media not only allows you to update your friends and family of your travel status, it can also become your worst nightmare if obtained by criminals with evil intention. What Are the Information That Criminals Can Exploit from Your Boarding Pass?1. PNR (Passenger Name Record)
PNR is a reservation code, which serves as a unique identifier of the passenger in the computer reservation system. It keeps track of all passenger under the same booking. Anyone who gets hold of this code have the ability to made changes to your reservation. Don't be surprised if your booking was cancel without your consent due to this leak. Criminals can also made use of this code to retrieve more information about you. 2. Exact details of your flight From time of departure to your destination, from flight number to your seat number, the exact details of your flight is clearly stated on your boarding pass. Criminals can use these information to make scam calls to your family members. Example they can call up your home and claim that they are calling from the airline that you took and paint a wild story of you sustaining serious injury during the flight and need your family members to transfer money for emergency operations. 3. Frequent Flyer Member Information This information will be printed on the boarding pass if you are a frequent flyer member. Criminals can use this information to access your reward system and use up your precious points. By now some of you might think that you were smart enough to consider this and therefore always posted your boarding pass revealing only your name and destination while blurring out the other information. However, the portion that most people missed out is the barcode on the boarding pass and this is the portion that poses the most danger. Criminals can obtain 2 additional information through the barcode: 1. Credit Card Details Self explanatory. Don't cry over spilled milk only when criminals went on a shopping spree using your credit card details 2. Home Address and contact details Firstly, criminals can use this to scam your family members. Secondly in the event that your whole family is going on this trip, your house become a target for burglars. In short, you are providing criminals an easy job of obtaining your personal information by posting your boarding pass on social media. Everyone will know where you went with the bombardment of photos for the next few days during your trip. Hence the photo of your boarding pass is seriously redundant. PS: You may want to revisit all your social media pages and remove all boarding passes you have uploaded in the past
