Japan's second largest city, Osaka, is known as the nation's kitchen because of its wide varieties of delicacies. Out of which, Okonomiyaki is a must try dish when in Osaka. There are numerous Okonomiyaki stall just in Namba, Osaka alone. My family decided to visit Momoju, a local recommended restaurant right at Namba Park during my family trip to Japan (07112018 - 14112018). My family arrived at the restaurant at around 7pm. There were about 8 groups in front of us but we were the only tourist in the queue. After around 45 mins of waiting, we were finally seated. The most special thing about this restaurant is that they not only served Okonomiyaki but also Monjayaki. OkonomiyakiOkonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake containing a variety of ingredients including flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, meat/ seafood topped with a variety of condiments. Okonomiyaki is said to be created in the Kansai region. Monjayaki (Monja)Monjayaki is a type of Japanese pan-fried batter, created in the Kanto region. Although the ingredients are similar to that used in Okonomiyaki, the way they are made is different. Okonomiyaki batter has all the ingredients mixed together and molded into a firm, round, pancake-like shape when cooked. Monjayaki batter is softer, and is spread evenly throughout the iron plate. It’s made by cooking the main ingredients first, spreading them into a circle on the grill, and then pouring the batter into the center. It is most often eaten when partially cooked, using a spatula-shaped spoon. Staff from Momoju will demonstrate how to cook Monja and you can try to cook the Monja thereafter. However it is really not an easy task to eat this dish. After failing fat too many times, the staff decided to help us scoop the monja into bit size pieces on the side of the iron plate. I was too busy trying to scoop the Monja to take any picture so following are some videos I found online: Overall Momoju is a nice restaurant to try authentic Okonomiyaki and Monjayaki.
